Considering that the country was going to tear itself apart before he even stepped into the White House, Abraham Lincoln probably felt that it wouldn’t be possible to overcompensate in his hiring of others.

At the age of 23, Abraham Lincoln had spent a month in the Black Hawk War, a small, brief, localized event in the upper Midwest.

Based on his previous, rather limited military experience, he needed a really good war secretary, and eventually he found one in Edwin Stanton.

Lee were embroiled in a bloody war of attrition in Northern Virginia, General William Tecumseh Sherman was in a stalemate outside of Atlanta, and Democrats were hammering away at a message that the war had become about slavery and that there was no end in sight – openly advocating settling with the Confederacy.

In 1860, Lincoln promised to contain, not end, slavery to get elected, as the majority of Americans were already weary from 40 years of national compromises on the subject.
