At the age of 23, Abraham Lincoln had spent a month in the Black Hawk War, a small, brief, localized event in the upper Midwest.

Based on his previous, rather limited military experience, he needed a really good war secretary, and eventually he found one in Edwin Stanton.

Let’s Not Sugar Coat Your $370 Billion Loss

Dear Typical Manager,

We’d like to preface this letter by saying that there is no excuse for our bad behavior.  However, facts are facts, and it’s time somebody presented this oft-repeated story without the sugar-coating.

Last year, you collectively lost $370 billion due to “low employee engagement” because you are a bad boss.

As we’ve all read on leadership and management blogs for the past month, that $370 billion is not fictitious.  It’s the eighth year in a row Gallup has done this study, and the numbers pretty much look the same every year.  Three hundred seventy is just 2013’s number.

John C. Frémont was a very well-known figure in the Civil War Era; known from his exploits in obtaining California for the United States during the Mexican War; and from being the first Republican presidential candidate in 1856.

Postmaster General Montgomery Blair and his brother, Frank Blair, Jr., highly recommended Frémont for the job of Commander of the West based in Missouri, and Abraham Lincoln initially approved the appointment of the abolitionist Frémont, believing he would be a loyal representative of the administration.
