Learn to Speak Well to Influence Others

abraham-lincoln-gettysburg-addressNO OTHER HUMAN ABILITY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO INSPIRE, PERSUADE, AND EXPLAIN LIKE GOOD SPEECH.

Abraham Lincoln was a marvel at speaking in public.

When historians point to the greatest speeches in history, Lincoln usually makes the top of the list with the Gettysburg Address, his inaugural speeches, and his debates with Senator Stephen Douglas.

He had been a politician and a trial lawyer for nearly 30 years, so he was fairly well-versed at talking to others.

Be Yourself so People Can Believe in You

???????????????ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS NOT A HANDSOME, “SLICK” POLITICIAN, BUT THAT DID NOT STOP HIM FROM LEAVING A LASTING IMPRESSION ON OTHERS.

Lincoln was an odd-looking creature, even for that time.

Today, at six-feet-four-inches, he would be considered tall, but back then he was considered a giant if you take into account the gradual growth of the American male over the last 150 years.

Not only that, he was very skinny, and became even more so as his war-torn administration progressed through the years; gawky would be a proper term for his physical appearance today.

Don’t Hang On to Bad Employees Too Long

81b6774fd5a8a359e35a12e4413c8257YOU CAN OVERDO PEOPLE-SKILLS BY DELAYING THE INEVITABLE FIRING OF THE WRONG PERSON FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION.

Abraham Lincoln kept the non-aggressive General George McClellan far too long before firing him.  Here is just a sampling of people who thought this was the case:

The Harvard Business Review article by Robert B. Kaiser and Robert E. Kaplan skewered Lincoln and other people-oriented leaders like him for being too slow to act on the wrong employees: Read the rest of this entry »
