Share Your Vision and Your People Will Follow

honestabeLETTING YOUR PEOPLE KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING IS ESSENTIAL IF YOU WANT THEM TO FOLLOW YOU.

Abraham Lincoln had a way of explaining what the Civil War was really all about on a personal level so that people felt it and understood it.

The official reason, of course, was to save the Union, but for many that was too high level; too abstract.

How did it affect the average person?

Lincoln phrased it this way in a speech to men of an Ohio regiment returning home to their families:

“I happen temporarily to occupy this big White House.  I am a living witness that any one of your children may look to come here as my father’s child has. It is in order that each of you may have through this free government which we have enjoyed, an open field and a fair chance for your industry, enterprise and intelligence; that you may all have equal privileges in the race of life, with all its desirable human aspirations. It is for this the struggle should be maintained, that we may not lose our birthright.  The nation is worth fighting for, to secure such an inestimable jewel.”

Inspire the Importance of Your Cause

LincolnGIVE YOUR PEOPLE THE SENSE OF PURPOSE THEY NEED TO ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS.

Abraham Lincoln framed the purpose of the Civil War for his people in a way that made them feel like they were critically important to the outcome of not only the conflict – but also to human history; allowing them to believe the Union’s cause was a righteous one; one that everyone could be a part of.

Lincoln’s message to his allies at home and abroad was that this was not only about America’s survival; this was about a free people’s ability to rule themselves; this was about the hope of mankind; this was the real purpose of the domestic struggle they were in.

Leaders Who Laugh Provide Hope for their People

PROPERLY USED, COMEDY CAN BOOST MOOD, PROVIDE EXPLANATION, AND MAKE DARK TIMES A BIT LIGHTER.

Abraham Lincoln was well-known for telling stories and jokes before becoming President.

In presiding over a four-year Civil War, Lincoln didn’t stop telling stories and jokes; though one might think that the morbidly serious events that happened daily around the President might have deadened that part of his personality.

The only thing that historians may point to any change at all in Lincoln’s humorous talent is that it became more fable-like, emphasizing a moral to both heal a wound or “mitigate disappointments.”[i]

Hiring Ambitious People Makes You Successful

civil-war-lincoln-pinkertonAbraham Lincoln hired some of the most ambitious and prominent people he could find for cabinet positions and advisors.

Although that might seem like Lincoln was inviting a group of back-stabbers into his own office to help him run things, he had a different thought.

He didn’t fear the daggers these men might aim at his back, but he did fear a party and a country splintering apart without the advice and support of successful statesmen at his side who represented a variety of factions and regional sections of the North.

Give Your Employees Everything You Can

Abraham-Lincoln-Statue-in-Lincoln-Memorial-Washington-D-C-PostersIF YOU PROVIDE WELL FOR PEOPLE, THEY CAN GIVE YOU THEIR BEST EFFORTS.

This was the situation in August 1864:  Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee were embroiled in a bloody war of attrition in Northern Virginia, General William Tecumseh Sherman was in a stalemate outside of Atlanta, and Democrats were hammering away at a message that the war had become about slavery and that there was no end in sight – openly advocating settling with the Confederacy.
